One of the biggest selling albums of the 20th century this soundtrack to the motion picture also had 2 singles reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (both of which are in this week's top 10). Prince won 2 Grammy Awards for this 13 million seller, Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Album of Original Score Written for Motion Picture or Television Special. The singles to reach the top were "When Doves Cry", 5 weeks in July 1984 and "Lets Go Crazy" 2 weeks at the end of September/October 1984. The title track "Purple Rain" would reach #2 on the Hot 100.

Today in Music History September 3rd

1964 - During a US tour The Beatles played two shows at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. They were paid $85,000 for the shows, tickets cost $4.00.

1966 - Donovan went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Sunshine Superman', a No.2 hit in the UK. The track featured then Yardbird and future Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.


1977 - The month after his death, Elvis Presley had 27 albums and 9 singles in the Top 100 charts in the UK. 'Moody Blue' was the No.1 album while 'Way Down' was No.1 on the singles chart, (putting him equal with the Beatles, each amassing 17 No.1 hits).


1983 - UB40 had their first UK No.1 single with 'Red Red Wine'. Taken from their album Labour of Love the song was a cover of the 1968 Neil Diamond hit song. The re-released single was a US No.1 in 1988.


2000 - British Boy band A1 went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the 1985 A-Ha hit 'Take On Me'.

1962 - Tommy Roe is on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with "Sheila"


1972 - The O’Jays received a gold record for Back Stabbers. It was the first hit for the group from Canton, OH. The O’Jays would place nine more hits on the pop and R&B charts.


1974 - The Osmonds were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the Johnny Bristol song 'Love Me For A Reason', the group's only UK No.1. Also a UK No.2 hit for Boyzone in 1994.



1976 - The Bee Gees sit at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "You Should Be Dancing" for one week.




1984 - After a 25-year career, Tina Turner had her first solo No.1 single in the US with
'What's Love Got To Do With It'.

1966 - The Beatles are on top of the Billboard Album chart for a 5th consecutive week with "Yesterday and Today".


1969 - Elvis Presley had the No.1 album in the UK with 'From Elvis in Memphis'



1970 - "War" by Edwin Starr started a 3 week run at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100


1975 - KC and the Sunshine Band went to No.1 on the US singles chart with, 'Get Down Tonight', the group's first of five No.1's it made No.21 in the UK.



1986 - Steve Winwood went to No.1 on the US singles chart with, 'Higher Love', a No.13 hit in the UK.


2004 - The MTV Music Video Awards. Best Rock Video "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet.
