The song would sell over 7 million copies and had sold over 500,000 in just a few months after its release.

Johnny Cash started a 4 week stay at the top of the Billboard album chart today in 1969 with "At San Quentin".  This was a follow up to his smash "Live at Folsom Prison" album from 1968 that topped the Billboard country album chart.
This album contained the smash single "A Boy Named Sue" which reached #1 on the Billboard country songs chart and #2 on the Hot 100.
