This was from the album of the same name was a huge seller for Gordon Lightfoot and also hit #1 in Canada but only managed #33 on the UK Top 40.
This was also the #3 song for the year in Canada and was the #27 song on Billboard Year End singles chart for 1974.

#1 Album Spotlight
Our album spotlight is on this day in 1975 when Elton John released "Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy".
It would debut at #1 on the Billboard Album chart and sold 2 million copies on its release, becoming the first album to go platinum on its release date. The album also reached the top spot in Canada, New Zealand and Australia, but peaked at #2 on the UK album chart. He was held out of #1 by The Best of The Stylistics, which spent 9 nonconsecutive weeks at #1 and was the best selling album of 1975 in the UK.
The only single released from the album was "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and it reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
