Today would have been the 78th birthday of David Houston.

David Houston held, until 2012, the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country (Country and Western back then) chart for a solo act, with his song "Almost Persuaded".

He was at the top for 9 consecutive weeks, from August through October 1966

The song also won the Grammy for Best Country and Western Song for 1966

The Beatles - In Concert (Tokyo, Japan 1966)

Even with poor sound quality this is still a treat to watch, the Beatles in concert from July 2nd 1966.  This is probably at the zenith of their popularity around the world.
This was the last in a series of 5 concerts for the Beatles at the now legendary Budokan Arena in Tokyo.  Instead of Beatlemania the Japanese press called it "Beatles Hurricane", most likely because the arrival of the fab four was delayed due to a hurricane off the coast on June 28th.

#1 Song of the Week - Good Vibrations

This week in 1966,  "Good Vibrations" debuted in the Billboard Top 40 at #38, after entering the Hot 100 the previous week at #81.
This was a departure from what the world had come to expect from the Beach Boys and would soon become a classic.  This was what Brian Wilson's publicist called a "pocket Symphony".

"Good Vibrations" reached #1 on the Hot 100 the week of December 10th for one week and was their 3rd #1 single after "I Get Around" and "Help Me, Rhonda".
The Beach Boys also got their first #1 single on the Official UK chart with this smash for 2 weeks in November of 1966.

Original vs Remake #14

This week our original was a big Motown single from 1966.

What Becomes of the Broken Hearted   by Jimmy Ruffin was a #7 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and was his biggest success on the Pop charts.  However it did get a second life in 1992 on the Adult Contemporary charts, topping that chart for 1 week in Feb of 1992.



The biggest success for a cover version was in 1996 when UK act Robson and Jerome hit the top of the UK Top 40  for 2 weeks.
Robson and Jerome were a duo that was in a UK television series called Soldier Soldier.

#1 Song of The Week

Today in 1966 - Lou Christie was striking gold for his hit "Lightnin’ Strikes". Christie was born Lugee Sacco and joined a group called The Classics before making his first recording in 1960. In 1961, he recorded under the name Lugee & The Lions until changing to Lou Christie for a string of hits beginning in 1963.

"Lightnin' Strikes" spent one week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in Feb of 1966.

Original vs Remake #4

From 1966 the original "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by the Temptations. #1 on the Billboard R&B chart for 8 weeks and peaked at #13 on the Hot 100.



There have been several remakes over the years but the most famous version was done in 1974 by the Rolling Stones on their It's Only Rock N Roll album.
