Today in Music History (February 28th)

February 28, 1970 - “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks. Written by Paul Simon, it is the biggest hit for the Queens, NY based folk rock duo. Simon initially writes the song with only two verses, but adds a third at the suggestion of Garfunkel and co-producer/engineer Roy Halee. 

Released on January 26, 1970, the single is an immediate smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #49 on February 7, 1970, it rockets to the top of the chart only three weeks later. The single wins two Grammy Awards including Record and Song Of The Year in 1971. 

An iconic song of the era, “Bridge” is covered numerous times over the years, including versions by Aretha Franklin (#1 R&B in 1971), Elvis Presley, Linda Clifford, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to name a few. The single release is inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1998.

Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park

Today in 1981 - Simon and Garfunkel reunited for a concert in New York's Central Park. Over 400,000 fans attend the show. The performance was recorded for a record and video release.


In my own humble opinion this concert proved that all the great solo songs that Paul Simon had could easily have been classics for the duo.   This was a great once in a lifetime concert.

The Biggest Selling Album of 1970

The #1 selling album in the UK for 1970 and 1971 was "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel.  They spent a total of 41 weeks at #1 on the UK Album Chart in 1970-71.

This was also the biggest selling album in the US for 1970 with 10 consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Album chart.

The title track went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks in Feb 1970 and #1 on the UK Top 40 for 3 weeks in March of 1970.  The other singles released were Cecilia, which went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 but did not chart in the UK.   The Boxer reached #7 on the Hot 100 and El Condor Pasa made it to #18.

1966 - Simon and Garfunkel started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'The Sounds Of Silence', a No.13 hit in the UK.


1969 - Marmalade were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of The Beatles song 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da'.


1970 - Rolf Harris was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Two Little Boys'. The song was written by American composer Theodore Morse and lyricist Edward Madden in 1902.


1977 - Wings were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Mull Of Kintyre.'
Spending nine weeks at No.1 in become the first single to sell over 2 million copies in the UK.


1987 - The Bangles are in the 3rd of 4 weeks at #1 with "Walk Like an Egyptian"


2000 - Santana with Rob Thomas on vocals begins its 11th straight week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Smooth".

2007 - Queen beat The Beatles to be crowned greatest British band of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners in the UK. They pipped the Fab Four in a live contest, trouncing other finalists The Rolling Stones, Oasis and Take That. The bands were judged on song-writing, lyrics, live performances, originality and showmanship. More than 20,000 listeners voted by email, text and phone.

1971 Grammy Awards

Today in 1971 The Grammy Awards for the year in music 1970 were held in Los Angeles California at the Hollywood Paladium and hosted by Andy Williams.
The BIG winner was Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.
They took home Record of the Year (Performer), Song of the Year (writer/producer Paul Simon), Album of the Year, Contemporary (Rock) Song of the Year,Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) and Best Engineered Recording (Roy Halee).



This video clip is very cool because it is one of the only times Simon and Garfunkel performed this song together before their breakup. They had recorded the song in there own studios and had it mixed together and basically refused to be together at this point. In the clip from that years Grammy's you could sense the tension between them but the managed to seem like a team for the show.

The other big hit at the 1971 Grammy awards was Ray Stevens and his #1 hit Everything is Beautiful, which was nominated for all the major awards and lost to Simon and Garfunkel. He did however win Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year and Best Sacred Performance.


The Beatles took home a Grammy Award in 1971 for Best Original Score written for a Motion Picture or Television Special with Let It Be
